We are beyond thrilled that Casey Plett has won the $60,000 Amazon Canada First Novel Award for her novel Little Fish! The award was presented in Toronto on May 22 at a ceremony hosted by the CBC’s Shelagh Rogers.

In accepting the award, Casey said: “If you had told me four or five years ago that there would be this much reaction, gratitude, appreciation and love for this story about a young, poor, sex-working transsexual in Winnipeg dealing with poverty, addiction and mental health ... it means more than the world, more than I can begin to say.”

Little Fish is the story of Wendy, a 30-year-old trans woman living in Winnipeg struggling to make sense of her life when she receives an unexpected call from a distant family friend with a startling secret: that Wendy’s opa (grandfather), a devout Mennonite farmer, may have been trans himself.

Little Fish was named one of the Globe and Mail’s best books of 2018 and is a current finalist for a Lambda Literary Award in the US. The book was also shortlisted for the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award, and Casey herself is a finalist for this year’s Dayne Ogilvie Prize for Emerging LGBTQ Writers from the Writers’ Trust of Canada.

Kudos to the other finalists who each receive $6,000 each, including Joshua Whitehead, author of Jonny Appleseed.

Congratulations and much love to Casey!
