Tea Mutonji and Kai Cheng Thom: Publishing Triangle Award winners

We're thrilled that both Tea Mutonji (Shut Up You're Pretty) and Kai Cheng Thom (I Hope We Choose Love) have won Publishing Triangle Awards, announced on April 30!

Shut Up You're Pretty won the Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction. Tea's book was also shortlisted for the Rogers Writers' Trust of Canada Fiction Prize last year. This story collection was the first title published under the VS. Books imprint edited by Vivek Shraya, dedicated to books by new and emerging BIPOC writers.

I Hope We Choose Love: A Trans Girl's Notes from the End of the World won the Publishing Triangle Award for Trans and Gender-Variant Literature. Kai Cheng's essay collection was also named an American Library Association Honor Book in February. Kai Cheng was previously shortlisted in this category in 2018, for her poetry book a place called No Homeland.

We congratulate both Tea and Kai Cheng, fellow finalists Arielle Twist (Disintegrate/Dissociate) and Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha (Tonguebreaker) and all the other winners and finalists!
