Tea Mutonji's debut novel Shut Up You're Pretty and Kai Cheng Thom's essay collection I Hope We Choose Love both appear on The Walrus' list of the Best Books of 2019, as selected by other Canadian authors.

Shut Up You're Pretty, the first book published under Vivek Shraya's VS. Books imprint, was a finalist for this year's Rogers Writers' Trust of Canada Fiction Prize. I Hope We Choose Love, Kai Cheng's first nonfiction book after having previously published a novel, a poetry collection, and a children's book, was also named one of the best books of the year by Autostraddle and the Writers' Trust of Canada.

For The Walrus list, Tea's book was selected by Mona Awad, author of Bunny and 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl. Kai Cheng's book was chosen by Casey Plett, the award-winning author of Little Fish.
